In a surprising political development, Aliyu Audu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Public Affairs, has officially resigned from his position. His resignation, tendered on June 8, 2025, was addressed to President Tinubu through the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and takes immediate effect.

Audu expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as an honor and privilege. However, his resignation comes amid concerns over the increasing defection of politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he believes threatens Nigeria’s democratic principles.

In a statement following his resignation, Audu clarified that his decision was not an act of rebellion but rather a matter of conscience and principle. He emphasized that while he does not align with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he refuses to be used as an instrument to reduce Nigeria to a one-party state.

Audu also voiced strong criticism of the political alliance between President Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, stating that it undermines progressive ideals. Despite stepping down, he assured that he would continue to support the government in power while advocating for political plurality and democratic values.
