Former Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, hosted former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar in Osogbo on Thursday, marking a significant moment in what observers describe as early political positioning for the 2027 general elections.

The high-profile meeting, held behind closed doors, sparked a wave of excitement among opposition supporters gathered outside the venue. Chants of “Tinubu will fall in 2027!” echoed through the streets as Atiku’s convoy arrived, underscoring a growing sentiment among factions of the opposition that a political shift is not only possible but imminent.

While neither Atiku nor Aregbesola explicitly confirmed plans for a 2027 alliance, their body language and warm exchange suggested shared political interests. The visit is seen by many as a potential rekindling of alliances between key figures in Nigeria's political landscape who were once close associates of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking briefly to the press, Aregbesola emphasized the need for unity, justice, and development in Nigeria, urging political actors to prioritize the welfare of the people. “The time has come for a serious reflection on the direction our country is heading. We must build a coalition that speaks to the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians,” he said.

Atiku, who has remained a prominent figure in the opposition since 2019, described his visit as a “consultation with patriotic stakeholders.” He refrained from confirming his 2027 ambitions but hinted at ongoing efforts to form a broad-based movement capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
