The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has stirred national discourse with a bold assertion that a one-party state could be a “blessing” for Nigeria. This statement came during a high-profile ceremony at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, where three Senators from opposition parties officially defected to the ruling APC.
Welcoming the lawmakers, Ganduje hailed the growing strength and unity within the APC, describing the influx of political heavyweights as a testament to the party's inclusive leadership and developmental vision. He emphasized that the increasing alignment of political actors under one party may provide a rare opportunity to drive national development without the friction of partisan gridlock.
“A one-party state, if led with vision and inclusiveness, can be a blessing rather than a curse,” Ganduje said. “There is nothing inherently wrong with political unity when it is built on shared goals for national progress.”
The three Senators, whose names were unveiled during the event, cited the APC’s performance at both federal and state levels as a motivating factor behind their defection. They pledged to work collaboratively to support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Ganduje reiterated that APC remains committed to democratic values, even as it garners wider political support across the country. He dismissed concerns over the health of Nigeria’s democracy, stating that internal party debates and inclusive governance would continue to ensure accountability and responsiveness.
