The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Abia State Chapter, has applauded Governor Alex Otti for approving a 100% salary increase for medical doctors in the state, a bold and unprecedented move aimed at strengthening the healthcare system and improving the welfare of medical professionals.
In a statement released today, the NMA described the decision as “a landmark gesture that will not only boost morale among doctors but also curb the persistent brain drain facing the state’s health sector.” The association noted that Governor Otti’s administration has demonstrated a deep understanding of the critical role healthcare professionals play in public health and state development.
“We extend our profound gratitude to His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, for taking this courageous and visionary step,” said Dr. Chimezie Ugochukwu, Chairman of the NMA Abia State Chapter. “This salary review is not just a reward for our hard work—it is a declaration that Abia values healthcare and those who deliver it.”
The NMA further urged other states to emulate Abia's example, stressing that better remuneration and working conditions are essential to reversing the trend of medical migration and retaining top talent within Nigeria.
Governor Otti, who assumed office with a strong reform agenda, has prioritized healthcare investment, infrastructural upgrades, and improved service delivery. The 100% salary hike comes as part of broader efforts to revitalize the public health system in Abia.
