The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step toward transforming Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) into a full-fledged university, as the bill proposing its conversion successfully passed its second reading on May 13, 2025.
Sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the bill seeks to establish the Yaba Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, ensuring the institution continues its legacy of excellence in technical and vocational education. During the plenary session, Bamidele emphasized that the transformation would enhance learning opportunities, promote research, and align the institution’s activities with Nigeria’s socio-economic needs.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, expressed strong support for the bill, highlighting YABATECH’s track record in advancing technical education in Nigeria. The bill has now been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further legislative review.
