In a strategic political development set to reshape Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race, former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has extended an olive branch to Labour Party leader and former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, by offering him the position of Vice Presidential running mate in a proposed coalition ticket.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Atiku emphasized the urgency for unity among opposition parties to end what he termed the “directionless governance and economic hardship” perpetuated by the current administration.

“At this critical time in our nation’s history, we must set aside personal ambitions for the greater good of Nigeria,” Atiku stated. “I am willing to serve only one term as president, after which I will fully support a peaceful transition of power. I believe Peter Obi is the right partner to lead that future.”

The proposal marks a significant step toward opposition realignment, reminiscent of the 2019 and 2023 elections, where both men ran on separate tickets. Political analysts suggest a unified front between Atiku’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Obi’s Labour Party (LP) could pose a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
