Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as one of the most incompetent, disconnected, and anti-people governments in Nigeria’s democratic history.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Atiku assessed the government's performance over the past two years, highlighting deepening poverty, reckless public spending, and policies that disproportionately harm the poor while benefiting the elite. He pointed to Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions, citing the Global Hunger Index 2024, which ranks Nigeria among the most affected by hunger and malnutrition.
Atiku also criticized the sharp rise in Nigeria’s public debt, which has surged from ₦49 trillion in 2023 to ₦144 trillion in 2025—a 150% increase. He accused the administration of prioritizing excessive borrowing while failing to implement policies that alleviate hardship for ordinary Nigerians.
Furthermore, Atiku condemned the 75% increase in National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) fees, arguing that essential services should not be turned into privileges for the wealthy. He also pointed to rising university tuition fees, which have made higher education increasingly inaccessible to poor families.
In his statement, Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to opposing any attempt to silence the opposition and vowed to reject efforts to establish a one-party state. He called on Nigerians to demand accountability and responsible leadership, urging political actors to unite in the fight against bad governance
