The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed a tragic incident involving a member of the Agunechemba security outfit, which resulted in the death of a woman in Nnewi, Anambra State. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at the Ibeto Junction, a location known for frequent traffic congestion.
According to eyewitness accounts, the security operative, while attempting to clear a gridlock, discharged a firearm into the air. Tragically, a stray bullet struck and killed a woman identified as Chiamaka Okeke, who was walking in the area at the time.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has expressed deep regret over the incident and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway. In a statement released by the police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the Commissioner described the operative as "trigger-happy" and emphasized the commitment of the police to ensure justice is served.
The Agunechemba security outfit, established earlier this year under the Anambra State Homeland Security Bill 2025, was designed to enhance security in the state. Governor Charles Soludo, who signed the bill into law, envisioned the group as a vital tool in combating insecurity in the region.
The police have initiated contact with the leadership of the Agunechemba outfit to identify the operative involved and ensure accountability. The Commissioner has also called for calm among residents, reiterating the importance of maintaining peace and order during this challenging time.
