Former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, Atiku Abubakar, has strongly condemned the recent wave of killings in Plateau State, describing the tragic loss of lives as a “national disgrace” and a clear indication that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has failed in his fundamental duty to protect Nigerians.
Reacting to the ongoing security crisis that has engulfed several communities in Plateau State, Atiku expressed deep sorrow over the senseless killings and displacement of innocent citizens. He lamented that despite repeated calls for decisive action, the federal government has remained largely indifferent to the worsening security situation in the Middle Belt and other parts of the country.
“This is beyond tragic. The Plateau killings are not just a failure of intelligence or response – they are a direct reflection of the ineptitude and lack of political will by the Tinubu-led administration. The President has failed Nigerians, and this is a national disgrace,” Atiku said in a statement issued by his media office.
He further stated that Nigeria is fast slipping into a state of anarchy, where terrorists, bandits, and criminal gangs operate freely without fear of consequence. “We cannot continue to normalize mass killings. This level of bloodshed and destruction demands immediate accountability and firm action, not excuses or empty rhetoric,” he added.
Atiku called on the international community, civil society organizations, and all well-meaning Nigerians to speak out against the deteriorating security landscape. He urged President Tinubu to overhaul his security architecture and ensure that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice.
“Our nation cannot afford to treat human lives as disposable. The federal government must rise to its responsibilities, not just in Plateau, but across all regions facing insecurity. Anything less is a betrayal of the oath of office,” he concluded.
