Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters and a prominent Nigerian activist, has called for the immediate prosecution of Patience Jonathan, former First Lady of Nigeria, over her involvement in the controversial N750 million jewelry scandal, emphasizing that it is unjust for 15 domestic workers to remain detained without trial since 2019.
In a recent statement, Sowore expressed outrage over the continued detention of the workers who have been incarcerated for years without formal charges, questioning the fairness of the justice system. He pointed out that while these workers are being denied their basic rights, Patience Jonathan, who has been accused of embezzling state funds to fund her luxury lifestyle, has not faced the same level of scrutiny.
The N750 million jewelry scandal centers around the former First Lady’s purchase of extravagant jewelry with alleged illicit funds, an issue that has sparked public outrage. Sowore argued that instead of being held accountable for her actions, Patience Jonathan has avoided justice, while innocent individuals continue to suffer behind bars without trial.
"How is it that domestic workers who have no political or financial influence are still languishing in prison, while Patience Jonathan, who has been linked to the misappropriation of millions of Naira in taxpayer money, remains free? This is an outrageous example of the selective application of justice," Sowore remarked.
He further called for an overhaul of Nigeria's justice system, demanding that those with significant power and influence be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their status or connections.
