The Office of the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has categorically denied allegations that the Minister downplayed recent concerns raised by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State regarding the security situation in the region.
In a statement issued today, the Minister’s Special Assistant (Media), Rabiu Ibrahim, described the claims as “categorically false” and a “gross distortion” of the Minister’s remarks. The statement emphasized that at no point did the Minister dismiss or undermine the gravity of the security challenges highlighted by Governor Zulum.
Governor Zulum had recently expressed alarm over the resurgence of Boko Haram activities in Borno State, warning that the state was “losing ground to terrorists” due to renewed attacks and kidnappings. The Governor called for increased efforts to address the escalating violence, which he described as a setback for the region.
Responding to these concerns, Minister Idris acknowledged the progress made in restoring peace and security across many parts of the country but admitted that challenges persist in certain areas. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and banditry under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“The Minister’s comments were intended to provide context on the progress made, not to dismiss or downplay legitimate concerns,” the statement read. “We urge media platforms to uphold the ethics of responsible journalism by avoiding sensationalism and publishing only verified and accurate information.”
The Minister also highlighted the ongoing efforts by the military and security forces, including sustained investments in security hardware and intelligence, to address the challenges in Borno and other affected regions. He called on all stakeholders, including state governments, to continue partnering with the Federal Government to bring lasting peace to the nation.
