The vibrant city of Lagos came alive in a spectacular celebration of heritage, music, and unity as the iconic Fanti Carnival made its much-anticipated return to the streets of Lagos Island. With dazzling costumes, pulsating rhythms, and an electrifying atmosphere, the event brought together thousands of locals and tourists in a colourful display of culture and community spirit.

Originally rooted in the Brazilian returnee communities of Lagos, the Fanti Carnival is a melting pot of Afro-Brazilian heritage, showcasing the deep cultural ties between Nigeria and the diaspora. This year’s edition themed “Lagos Unites in Colour and Culture”, did not disappoint — with a kaleidoscope of parades, traditional performances, and cultural exhibitions that stretched from Campos Square to the historical streets of Broad and Marina.

In attendance were notable dignitaries, cultural custodians, and representatives of the Lagos State Government, all echoing a shared commitment to preserving the city’s rich history and promoting its creative economy.

Commissioner for Tourism, Arts & Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, expressed her excitement, stating, “The return of the Fanti Carnival is a celebration of who we are — a people of pride, resilience, and rhythm. This is more than an event; it's a cultural awakening.”

The carnival featured over 20 cultural troupes, each telling their stories through music, dance, and costume, while also highlighting the spirit of unity that binds the city’s diverse communities. Food vendors, artisans, and creatives added their flavour to the festivities, turning the carnival into a full-sensory experience.
