Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched a groundbreaking nationwide initiative aimed at tackling the growing threat of cancer in the country. In a bold move to ensure a far-reaching impact, she has mobilised traditional rulers, religious leaders, health experts, and community influencers to join forces in the fight against the deadly disease.
Speaking at the official unveiling of the "Renewed Hope for a Cancer-Free Nigeria" campaign in Abuja, Senator Tinubu highlighted the urgent need for collective action. She noted that cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in Nigeria due to late detection, stigma, and inadequate access to treatment.
“Our culture and community leaders hold tremendous influence. By engaging our traditional rulers and faith leaders, we are taking the message of prevention, early screening, and treatment directly to the grassroots,” the First Lady stated.
The event brought together first-class monarchs from across the country, top government officials, representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Ministry of Health, and various cancer advocacy groups. In their remarks, traditional rulers pledged their full support, committing to use their platforms to spread awareness and encourage regular screenings.
As part of the initiative, mobile screening clinics and public sensitisation programs will be deployed across rural and urban communities. The campaign also emphasises educating women about breast and cervical cancer, and providing access to subsidised or free diagnostic services.
