Former Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah has raised concerns over the financial difficulties faced by former Nigerian lawmakers, revealing that many struggle to meet basic obligations such as paying their children's school fees after leaving office.
Speaking during a recent public forum, Senator Na’Allah highlighted the harsh economic realities that ex-public office holders often face, challenging the widespread perception that all lawmakers leave office with wealth and privilege.
“It is a painful reality that many former legislators cannot meet essential responsibilities, including school fees for their children, once they are out of office,” Na’Allah stated. “The public sees the glamour while in office but forgets the aftermath for many who served with integrity.”
Na’Allah, who represented Kebbi South in the National Assembly, emphasized the need for a national conversation on the welfare and reintegration of former public officials. He also underscored the broader economic challenges affecting both former lawmakers and everyday citizens alike.
His comments have sparked debate on the expectations of public service, financial transparency, and post-office support structures. Critics argue that lawmakers should manage public funds and their personal finances more responsibly, while others have called for reforms to ensure a smoother transition after public service.
