Prominent Nigerian activist and presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly criticized the decision of several northern Nigerian governors to close schools during the ongoing Ramadan fasting period. Sowore branded the governors as ‘ignorant’ and ‘idiotic,’ asserting that the closures were an unnecessary and counterproductive move that undermines the future of young Nigerians.

Sowore expressed his outrage in a statement released earlier today, arguing that the closures were ill-advised and reflect a lack of foresight. “It is both ignorant and idiotic for governors to close schools during Ramadan, especially when millions of children, even in the north, are already struggling with educational setbacks. The idea that fasting should interfere with schooling is not only misguided but regressive,” Sowore stated.

He emphasized that Ramadan is a sacred time for Muslims, but he believes that educational continuity should not be compromised. “Students can still attend school while observing their fast. This is an age-old tradition that has worked for centuries across various parts of the Muslim world. Instead of closing schools, governors should focus on ensuring that students are supported and can maintain their religious obligations without sacrificing their education,” he added.

The closure of schools during Ramadan has raised concerns about the negative impact on the academic progress of children in the north. Sowore argued that this decision is emblematic of deeper systemic issues in governance, where short-term decisions are often made without considering their long-term consequences for the younger generation.
