The House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Amendment has announced an extension of the deadline for the resubmission of proposals for the creation of new states and local governments. The new deadline is now set for March 26, 2025, in response to public requests for additional time.
Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Committee on Constitution Review, stated that the extension aims to accommodate the public's demand for more time to ensure that all proposals strictly comply with the provisions of Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution. This section outlines the criteria for state creation, which must be adhered to for any proposal to be considered.
"The Committee remains committed to supporting legitimate efforts that align with constitutional provisions and will only consider proposals that comply with the stipulated guidelines," Kalu said. He emphasized that all resubmissions must include three hard copies of the proposals and memoranda, which should be submitted to the committee's secretariat, while soft copies must be sent to info@hccr.gov.ng.
