The Governments of Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Sokoto states have collectively invested N867 million in an ambitious tree planting initiative aimed at combating desertification, reducing environmental degradation, and promoting sustainable development. The initiative, which spans a period of one year, demonstrates the region’s commitment to enhancing ecological conservation and addressing the pressing issue of deforestation.
The coordinated effort saw each state dedicate significant funds towards the planting and nurturing of indigenous tree species, with a particular focus on the creation of green belts, forest restoration, and the provision of shade and windbreaks to mitigate the harsh effects of climate change in the Northern region.
In Kano, the state government allocated a substantial N300 million to plant over 500,000 trees, ranging from fruit-bearing varieties to indigenous species critical for soil health. The project also involved local communities in the planting process, ensuring active participation in environmental stewardship.
Katsina, with an allocation of N220 million, focused on creating sustainable green spaces within urban and rural areas, while Jigawa and Sokoto together committed N347 million to similar initiatives. The combined efforts have already led to the planting of millions of trees, creating job opportunities, and raising awareness about the importance of trees in ensuring environmental resilience.
