In a significant move aimed at safeguarding the health of Nigeria's children, the House of Representatives has called on the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to begin an urgent nationwide diphtheria vaccination campaign in schools across the country.

The recommendation follows growing concerns over the recent uptick in diphtheria cases reported in various regions, particularly among young children and school-age students. The House of Representatives, during its session today, emphasized the importance of preventing further spread of the disease, which has already caused fatalities and public health concerns in affected states.

The Speaker of the House, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who presented the motion, underscored that the diphtheria outbreak poses a severe threat to Nigeria’s educational system, with many schools already affected by closures in impacted areas. "It is crucial that we act swiftly to protect our children and prevent the spread of diphtheria," said Gbajabiamila. "Vaccination remains the most effective measure, and it is imperative that the government prioritizes the health of our youth."

The House also urged the Ministry of Health to work closely with local and international health organizations to ensure that the vaccination campaign is both comprehensive and effective. The vaccination effort is expected to be conducted in schools nationwide, targeting children who have not yet received the diphtheria vaccine or those who may need booster doses.

Diphtheria, a highly contagious bacterial infection, can lead to severe complications such as breathing difficulties, heart failure, and in some cases, death. The disease, which primarily affects children under the age of five, has recently re-emerged in Nigeria, further highlighting the need for immediate public health inteventions.
