In a shocking act of violence, armed gunmen attacked a group of supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Rivers State, leaving several individuals injured. The attack, which occurred amid escalating political tensions in the region, has raised concerns over the safety of political activists and the growing instability surrounding the upcoming elections.

The incident took place in the early hours of today in the heart of Port Harcourt, where Governor Fubara’s supporters had gathered to show solidarity ahead of political campaigns. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, believed to be heavily armed, opened fire on the group before fleeing the scene. Several people were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but political analysts have speculated that the incident could be linked to the growing rivalry between political factions in the state as the 2025 gubernatorial election approaches. Tensions between Governor Fubara's camp and his political opponents have been rising in recent weeks, with sporadic incidents of violence and intimidation being reported across various parts of the state.

Governor Fubara condemned the attack in the strongest terms, expressing his concern for the safety of his supporters and calling for a thorough investigation into the matter. In a statement, he said, “This senseless act of violence is a direct assault on democracy and the right to peacefully express political views. I call on the security agencies to take swift action in bringing the perpetrators to justice.”

In response to the incident, the Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation and vowed to take appropriate measures to ensure that those responsible are apprehended. The police also urged all citizens to remain calm and report any suspicious activities that could further escalate tensions in the area.

Political analysts are warning that unless urgent steps are taken to address the rising violence and ensure a safe environment for voters and campaigners, the situation could spiral into further unrest as the election season intensifies.
