The recent decision by the governments of Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, and Kebbi states to close schools for up to five weeks during Ramadan has been met with widespread condemnation from various groups. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have all expressed strong opposition to this move.

These organizations argue that the closures are unjust to non-Muslim students, disrupt academic schedules, and exacerbate the already high out-of-school rates in these regions, which average 44%—far exceeding the national average. They advocate for inclusive solutions that balance religious observance with educational continuity, citing examples from countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which adapt school schedules during Ramadan without full closures.

NANS has issued a 72-hour ultimatum for the reversal of this policy, threatening nationwide protests if unmet. CAN has also threatened legal action if dialogue fails to yield inclusive solutions. The groups urge the governors to reconsider these policies in the spirit of fairness and national cohesion.
