Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian government to take immediate and decisive action in response to the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The human rights organization has condemned any attempt to ignore or downplay the serious nature of these allegations and is urging for an impartial, transparent investigation into the matter.

Senator Natasha, who represents the Kogi Central Senatorial District, publicly accused Senate President Akpabio of sexual harassment, an incident she claims occurred during an official event. These allegations have ignited widespread concern over the treatment of women in Nigerian politics and the persistence of gender-based violence.

Amnesty International's regional spokesperson, Chika Uwazie, emphasized that such accusations must not be dismissed or swept under the rug due to the political stature of those involved. "Sexual harassment is a serious violation of human rights, and it is imperative that all allegations, regardless of the positions held by the accused, be thoroughly and transparently investigated. The Nigerian government must demonstrate its commitment to protecting women’s rights and upholding justice," Uwazie said.

The organization reiterated the importance of adhering to international human rights standards, which call for robust responses to gender-based violence. Amnesty International also urged the Nigerian government to ensure that any legal proceedings are carried out without interference and that Senator Natasha receives adequate protection against potential retaliation.

Amnesty International further called on Nigerian authorities to improve their legal frameworks and institutional support systems to better address sexual harassment and violence in public spaces, including legislative bodies. It highlighted the need for stronger accountability and for empowering women to safely report such violations without fear of stigma or retribution.
