Tigran Gambaryan, a prominent cybersecurity expert and former Binance executive, has revealed that the Nigerian government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu allegedly sought unauthorized access to Binance user data to monitor and target opposition figures.
In a shocking revelation, Gambaryan, who previously held a senior position at Binance, claims that the Nigerian government’s request for sensitive user data was part of a broader strategy to stifle political dissent ahead of the upcoming elections. According to Gambaryan, the request was made without proper legal procedures and was in direct violation of both Nigerian and international privacy laws.
"The Nigerian government’s attempt to access the personal data of Binance users without due process is deeply concerning,” Gambaryan stated. “Such a move not only infringes on the fundamental rights of citizens but also undermines the integrity of democratic processes by targeting opposition members under the guise of national security.”
Binance, one of the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges, has long maintained its commitment to user privacy and data protection. According to Gambaryan, Binance firmly rejected the Nigerian government’s request, citing the lack of a legitimate legal basis and its strict adherence to global compliance standards.
The alleged request for data raises serious questions about the erosion of privacy rights in Nigeria and the growing use of digital platforms for political surveillance. Critics have warned that such actions set a dangerous precedent for the abuse of technology in the hands of authoritarian regimes.
