In a historic move that underscores South Africa's growing role on the global stage, President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit South Africa for a state visit later this month. This high-profile visit comes at a time of escalating global tension, especially amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The two leaders are expected to hold bilateral talks focused on strengthening diplomatic ties, enhancing trade relations, and exploring opportunities for cooperation in sectors such as energy, agriculture, and defense. South Africa has consistently advocated for peace and dialogue in the face of global conflicts and has reiterated its stance on neutrality in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

"We are committed to fostering constructive dialogue in the pursuit of peace and stability in the international community," said President Ramaphosa. "This visit provides an opportunity for South Africa to engage directly with President Zelensky on issues of mutual concern, particularly as the conflict in Ukraine has far-reaching consequences for global security."

Zelensky’s visit is expected to generate significant international attention, as it marks the first state visit by a Ukrainian president to South Africa. It also comes at a critical juncture, as countries around the world grapple with the impact of the war on global supply chains, energy markets, and security dynamics.

Despite South Africa's longstanding relationship with Russia, including its membership in the BRICS bloc, Pretoria has stressed its commitment to promoting peace and offering a platform for dialogue. The meeting with President Zelensky will likely cover a range of issues, from humanitarian assistance to the potential for South Africa to play a role in peace negotiations.

“We look forward to welcoming President Zelensky to South Africa,” said South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor. “This is an important opportunity for us to offer our support to Ukraine in a time of great need, while also upholding our principles of peace and diplomacy."

The state visit, which is scheduled to take place in late February 2025, will include a series of high-level meetings between the two leaders, as well as public engagements to highlight the strengthening relationship between South Africa and Ukraine.
