Renowned human rights activist and lawyer, Chidi Odinkalu, has sharply criticized former Nigerian military leader General Ibrahim Babangida’s newly released memoir, describing the contents as riddled with falsehoods and baseless accusations. In a statement issued today, Odinkalu lambasted Babangida for using the book as a platform to level allegations against individuals who are no longer alive to defend themselves.

Odinkalu, a prominent critic of Nigeria’s military dictatorship era, specifically called out Babangida for attempting to rewrite history with unfounded allegations. He pointed out that the memoir targets several deceased figures, including high-profile political leaders, who cannot refute or clarify the claims made against them.

“This book is filled with distortions of the truth and reckless allegations against people who have passed away and cannot defend their legacies. Babangida’s attempt to air grievances against dead persons is nothing short of cowardly,” Odinkalu stated.

According to Odinkalu, such tactics are an affront to the principles of justice and accountability, particularly given the weight of history and the inability of the accused to mount a defense. He emphasized the need for a more responsible approach to documenting the nation’s history—one that respects the lives and legacies of those who cannot speak for themselves.

Chidi Odinkalu further called on the public to critically examine the contents of Babangida's memoir, urging that it be seen for what it is: a self-serving narrative intended to shape public perception while disregarding the facts.

“It is important for Nigerians, especially the younger generation, to understand that history cannot be rewritten for personal gain. We must uphold the truth, honor those who have passed, and demand accountability from those who are still living,” he concluded.
