In a heartfelt tribute to one of Oyo State’s most distinguished sons, Governor Seyi Makinde has officially announced the renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan, in honour of the late former Governor, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo.

The announcement was made during an interdenominational commendation service held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, as part of the state’s final rites for the late elder statesman. Dr. Olunloyo, who passed away on April 6, 2025, at the age of 89, was not only a former governor of the old Oyo State but also the pioneer Rector of the institution now bearing his name.

Governor Makinde described the renaming as a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy in education, governance, and intellectual excellence continues to inspire generations. “We must give honour to whom it is due,” the governor stated. “Dr. Olunloyo laid the academic foundation of this great institution, and today, we immortalize his contributions to technical and vocational education in our state.”

In addition to the renaming, the governor announced plans to preserve and digitize Dr. Olunloyo’s personal library, describing it as a “treasure trove of knowledge” that will serve as a research and tourism hub for future generations4.

The newly named Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan, stands as a lasting symbol of the late governor’s enduring impact on education and public service in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
