National Assembly Members from Osun State have strongly condemned former Governor of Osun State, and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, over his alleged role in the violent takeover of local government councils in the state. The lawmakers, who represent various constituencies in Osun, described Oyetola's actions as unconstitutional, undemocratic, and an assault on the democratic rights of the people of Osun.
The members expressed their outrage following reports of armed forcefully-installed administrators in local government areas across the state. The lawmakers argue that these actions not only disregard the established electoral processes but also undermine the principles of democracy that the country strives to uphold.
In a joint statement issued by the lawmakers, they accused Oyetola of using violence and intimidation to forcefully displace democratically elected council chairmen, a move they termed as "a blatant attempt to subvert the will of the people and erode the democratic structure that has been established in Osun State."
"This act is a clear violation of the constitutional right of the people of Osun to elect their leaders in a free and fair manner. The actions of Minister Oyetola represent a disturbing trend of using state power for personal political gain," said Hon. Adebayo Ige, the spokesperson for the group.
The lawmakers have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately intervene and ensure that the rule of law is upheld in Osun State. They urged the federal government to hold Oyetola accountable for his role in the violent takeover and restoration of elected local government officials who were unlawfully removed.
