In a groundbreaking move to strengthen maritime security, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, today unveiled a fleet of advanced armoured gunboats designed to combat sea piracy, armed robbery, and other criminal activities along Nigeria’s waterways.

The state-of-the-art gunboats, which were inaugurated in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, are part of the Nigerian Police Force’s ongoing efforts to enhance security in the Niger Delta region, which has long struggled with criminal activities in its vast network of rivers and creeks.

Speaking at the launch, IGP Usman Alkali Baba emphasized that the introduction of these gunboats marks a major step forward in the fight against the growing threat of sea piracy and other maritime crimes that have affected local communities, hindered economic activities, and threatened the safety of seafarers and citizens alike.

“The Nigerian Police is committed to tackling the challenges faced by our maritime sector. The unveiling of these armoured gunboats is a clear demonstration of our resolve to ensure the safety and security of our waterways. With these gunboats, we will be better equipped to patrol and protect our rivers, ensuring that criminals cannot continue to terrorize our communities and disrupt our economy,” said IGP Baba.

The armoured gunboats, fitted with high-powered weaponry and advanced communication systems, are expected to greatly enhance the operational capabilities of the police in the region. They will be deployed to key hotspots along the Niger Delta’s waterways, where piracy, illegal oil bunkering, and kidnapping for ransom have been rampant.

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, who was present at the unveiling, expressed his support for the initiative, calling it a necessary intervention to address the security challenges in the state and its surrounding waters.

“We welcome this strategic move by the Inspector General of Police. The safety of our people and businesses in Rivers State is paramount, and these gunboats will be crucial in ensuring that our waterways are safe for legitimate trade and travel,” said Governor Wike.

The unveiling ceremony also saw the presence of top officials from the Nigerian Police Force, military, local government leaders, and members of the public. The armoured gunboats will join the larger fleet of security operations that are already active in combating crimes in the region.
