The Benue State House of Assembly has officially suspended 13 of its members for their vocal opposition to the recent removal of the state’s Chief Judge. The lawmakers were suspended following allegations of insubordination and disrespect for the legislative authority of the Assembly.
The suspension came after the 13 lawmakers, who had raised concerns about the legality and fairness of the Chief Judge's removal, failed to adhere to internal procedures regarding the matter. The Assembly leadership, in its official statement, condemned what it described as a deliberate attempt to undermine the authority of the House.
In addition to the suspension, the affected lawmakers have been ordered to refund the travel allowances they had received for a recent official trip. The funds, which were part of the Assembly's budget for legislative activities, are now deemed improperly spent according to the Assembly’s decision, as the trip was allegedly used to further the opposition’s agenda instead of advancing the interests of the people of Benue State.
The Benue Assembly emphasized that these measures were taken to maintain discipline, order, and respect for the rule of law within its ranks. A formal investigation will be conducted to ensure that due process was followed in the removal of the Chief Judge and to assess any further breaches of the Assembly’s codes of conduct.
The suspended lawmakers, in a joint statement, have condemned the actions of the Assembly leadership, describing the move as politically motivated and an attempt to stifle dissenting voices. They have pledged to challenge the decision in court, calling it unconstitutional and an infringement on their rights as elected representatives.
