Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commended Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State for his bold decision to proceed with the local government elections despite pressure and opposition from the federal government.

Atiku praised Adeleke’s courage, emphasizing that his stance represents a commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and the rights of the people to determine their leadership at the local level. The federal government had earlier attempted to influence the postponement of the elections, citing concerns over legal and procedural issues.

In a statement issued by his office, Atiku noted that Adeleke’s decision is a testament to his leadership and determination to uphold the sovereignty of state governments in line with the constitution. He further expressed his belief that local government elections are fundamental in strengthening grassroots democracy and empowering citizens to take ownership of their governance.

“The actions of Governor Adeleke in choosing to proceed with the elections, despite federal opposition, send a strong message about the importance of local governance and the need to allow democratic processes to take their course,” Atiku said. “This is a moment of pride for democracy in Nigeria, and it is a reminder that elected officials at all levels must act in the best interests of the people they serve.”

Atiku also reiterated his commitment to supporting and promoting the principles of democracy and federalism, stressing that the Nigerian constitution must always be the guiding framework for all actions taken by leaders across the country.
