A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck off the northern coast of Indonesia today at approximately 9:30 AM local time. The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 50 kilometers northwest of the city of Sibolga in North Sumatra, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake was felt strongly in nearby coastal areas, prompting immediate safety measures and assessments. Fortunately, there have been no reports of a tsunami resulting from the quake.

Local authorities are currently conducting damage assessments and monitoring for any aftershocks. Initial reports indicate that some buildings in Sibolga and surrounding towns experienced minor structural damage, but no casualties have been confirmed at this time.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has mobilized emergency response teams to assist affected areas and provide necessary support to residents. Evacuation centers have been established for those who feel unsafe returning to their homes.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressed his concern for the affected communities and urged citizens to remain vigilant. He stated, "We are closely monitoring the situation and will ensure that all necessary resources are deployed to assist those impacted by this earthquake."
