In a bold statement today, Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate and leader of the Labour Party, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to focus more on domestic engagement by prioritizing visits to Nigerian states, following his extensive international travels. Obi's comments come after reports that President Tinubu has made 30 public trips overseas since assuming office, raising concerns about his commitment to addressing pressing national issues.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, Obi emphasized that while international diplomacy is vital, the challenges facing Nigeria, including security, economic stability, and infrastructure development, demand the President’s direct attention and presence within the country. According to Obi, there is a pressing need for the president to engage more with Nigerians on the ground, particularly in the states, where citizens are grappling with the day-to-day realities of governance.

“I acknowledge the importance of representing Nigeria globally, but it is equally important that the president listens to the concerns of the people at home,” Obi stated. “The president has made over 30 public trips abroad, but it is time for him to turn his attention to the needs of Nigerians in every state. We have pressing issues on the ground that require immediate solutions, and the people need to see their president actively engaging with them.”

Obi’s statement resonates with calls from various Nigerian stakeholders who argue that the President’s frequent overseas trips may be seen as an indication of prioritizing international concerns over local issues. While acknowledging the significance of foreign relations, Obi stressed that Nigeria's long-term prosperity lies in strengthening its internal systems.

“It is crucial for the president to be visible in every part of Nigeria,” Obi continued. “From the northeast to the southwest, from the Niger Delta to the far north, the people deserve to hear directly from their leader and feel his presence in their communities. It is time for President Tinubu to show that his commitment to Nigeria extends beyond the borders of the country.”
