A violent confrontation between farmers and herders in Jigawa State has resulted in the tragic loss of nine lives and left four others seriously injured. The incident occurred on Thursday, January 3, 2025, in the Kiyawa Local Government Area, sparking concerns over escalating tensions between the two groups.
According to local authorities, the clash erupted when a group of herders allegedly allowed their cattle to stray into farmland, damaging crops and leading to an altercation with farmers. The situation quickly escalated into violence, with both sides reportedly armed, and several individuals caught in the crossfire.
The State Police Command confirmed the deaths, adding that four individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. The authorities are investigating the incident, and security forces have been deployed to the area to restore order.
Governor Badaru Abubakar expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, emphasizing the state's commitment to resolving the long-standing issues between farmers and herders. "We deeply regret this tragic loss of lives. We are doing everything in our power to ensure that justice is served and to prevent such incidents in the future. It is imperative that both communities work together to foster peace and understanding," the governor said in a statement.
