In a decisive move to uphold the rule of law and restore accountability within local governance, Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has announced the suspension of the village head and members of the village council, over allegations of abuse of power.
The suspension follows thorough investigations revealing that the village head, alongside council members, engaged in practices that violated established community norms and the rights of local residents. These actions have been deemed detrimental to the well-being of the village and contrary to the vision of the current administration to promote transparent and responsible governance at all levels.
Governor Otu emphasized that the administration remains committed to ensuring that traditional institutions operate within the bounds of the law, prioritizing the welfare of the people above all else. He further stressed that any form of corruption, exploitation, or abuse of power will not be tolerated.
"Effective leadership is built on the principles of justice, fairness, and integrity. It is essential that those in positions of authority serve the people with honesty and respect," Governor Otu said. "The suspension of these individuals is a necessary step to restore order and confidence within the community."
The governor has directed the relevant authorities to oversee the appointment of a caretaker committee to manage the village affairs during the interim period.
