In a shocking admission, Rotimi Amaechi, a key figure of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has openly confessed that the opposition party financially supported women to organize demonstrations against the administration of then-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of Transportation, made the statement during a political engagement on Monday, January 29, 2025. He revealed that in the lead-up to the 2015 general elections, the APC had engaged in several protests, including paying women to participate in public demonstrations that criticized the policies and governance of Jonathan’s administration.

"This is a political game, and we played it as best as we could at the time," Amaechi remarked. "We made sure the protests were organized. We paid people to participate, especially women, to show the discontent against Jonathan’s government."

Amaechi’s revelation has sparked intense debates across Nigeria’s political landscape. While some see it as a candid acknowledgment of political strategies, others view it as an attempt to shift focus from ongoing issues within the ruling government.

The APC, in response, has declined to comment further on Amaechi’s remarks, although they have acknowledged the role of grassroots mobilization in the party’s rise to power.
