The Nigerian Senate has officially declared the seat of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, vacant, following a resolution passed earlier today. The Senate’s decision comes after a series of legal and constitutional deliberations regarding the Governor’s continued absence from office.

The resolution was passed after it was established that Governor Okpebholo had failed to fulfill his constitutional duties and responsibilities as the head of Edo State for an extended period, leading to significant concerns about governance and the state’s well-being. According to the Senate, the Governor’s prolonged absence, despite multiple efforts to reach out and clarify his position, left the state with a leadership vacuum, creating instability in the governance structure.

The Senate emphasized that the action was taken in accordance with Nigeria’s Constitution, which mandates that the position of a state governor remains filled to ensure the effective administration of the state. In line with the decision, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be called upon to conduct a by-election to fill the vacancy.

The Senate’s President, Ahmed Lawan, expressed that the move was necessary to protect the integrity of Edo State’s governance and uphold the principles of democracy. He reassured citizens that the Senate remains committed to ensuring a functional and accountable leadership structure in every state of the federation.

In a statement, Governor Okpebholo's office expressed disappointment over the Senate’s decision but promised to address the matter through the appropriate legal channels. The office reiterated that Governor Okpebholo has been focused on addressing personal and health challenges, which had impacted his ability to perform his official duties.
