In a significant operation, the Nigerian Navy successfully intercepted 19 stowaways aboard two separate Europe-bound vessels in Lagos waters. The stowaways, who were attempting to illegally travel to Europe, were apprehended by the Navy in a coordinated effort to curb human trafficking and maintain maritime security.
The operation, which took place over the past week, saw the Nigerian Navy’s vigilance and expertise play a key role in preventing a dangerous and unlawful migration attempt. The stowaways, a mix of young men and women, were found concealed in various sections of the vessels, attempting to escape undetected by the crew and authorities.
Speaking on the successful operation, the Navy spokesperson, Commander Adebayo Olayemi, emphasized the commitment of the Nigerian Navy to safeguard national and international waters, combat illegal immigration, and disrupt human trafficking networks operating along the West African coast.
“This interception highlights our continued efforts to uphold security on Nigeria’s waterways. The Nigerian Navy remains committed to addressing the challenges of stowaways, illegal migration, and human trafficking. We are resolute in ensuring that no one is put in harm’s way by such dangerous means of migration,” Commander Olayemi stated.
