In a recent statement that has garnered attention, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo suggested that Nigeria should engage in diplomatic cooperation with the United States, under former President Donald Trump’s leadership, to demonstrate that the country is not "entirely a ‘shithole country.’"
Obasanjo’s comments, which came in an interview with local media, were in response to Trump’s controversial remarks made during his time in office, where he reportedly described some African nations, including Nigeria, in disparaging terms. The former Nigerian leader, widely regarded for his influence in both national and international politics, acknowledged the damage caused by such statements but also expressed the importance of proving Nigeria’s worth on the global stage.
“While Trump’s words were harsh, they should serve as a call to action for Nigeria,” Obasanjo said. “The best way to change perceptions is by working hard to elevate the country’s economic, political, and social standing. Nigeria should strategically engage with the U.S. under Trump’s leadership and showcase its potential for growth, investment, and collaboration."
Obasanjo emphasized that, despite the challenges Nigeria faces, including corruption, poverty, and security issues, the country remains one of the largest economies in Africa, rich in resources, culture, and history. He argued that establishing stronger ties with the U.S. would not only demonstrate Nigeria's potential but also highlight its commitment to improving governance and addressing the issues that have marred its reputation.
"Rather than focusing on the rhetoric of the past, Nigeria should engage in pragmatic diplomacy with Trump to reshape its image," Obasanjo added. "Through collaborative efforts in trade, security, and development, Nigeria can prove that it is much more than the negative stereotypes often associated with it."
