Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has reiterated that Nigeria is not under military rule, emphasizing the importance of a democratic approach to governance as the country navigates its economic reforms. Governor Mohammed made these remarks in response to the ongoing debate surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms.
In his statement, Governor Mohammed warned that the current administration must avoid the arrogance that often accompanies top-down decision-making, particularly in relation to the tax reform bills that are being discussed at the federal level. He stressed that President Tinubu’s government needs to be sensitive to the concerns of all Nigerians, particularly those in the northern region, where citizens have expressed deep reservations about the proposed tax policies.
“We are in a democracy, not a military regime,” Governor Mohammed stated. “It is crucial that the government listens to the voices of all Nigerians, including those in the north, whose economic concerns must be addressed. The Tinubu administration must avoid an overbearing or dismissive stance and should engage in dialogue with all stakeholders before implementing any reforms that could have wide-reaching effects.”
Governor Mohammed further highlighted that while economic reforms are necessary for national development, it is equally important to take into account the unique challenges faced by different regions of the country. He expressed concern that the proposed tax bills could disproportionately affect the northern states, many of which are grappling with higher levels of poverty and unemployment compared to other regions.
“The north has specific economic realities that cannot be ignored. The Tinubu administration must consider the potential impact of these reforms on ordinary citizens and businesses in the region,” Governor Mohammed emphasized. “A one-size-fits-all approach to taxation could deepen the existing inequalities, which is why it is vital to consult with northern leaders and stakeholders who can provide valuable insights into the regional challenges.”
The Bauchi Governor called for a more inclusive approach to policy-making, urging the President to engage in consultations with regional leaders, particularly from the north, to ensure that the tax reforms do not unfairly burden the most vulnerable populations.
