In a stark warning issued today, human rights activist and political leader Omoyele Sowore condemned the appointment of Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector General of Police (IGP), labeling it illegal and a direct threat to the integrity of the Nigerian Police Force. Sowore's statement comes amid increasing reports of human rights violations under Egbetokun's leadership, which he argues could lead to the complete disintegration of public trust in law enforcement.

Sowore emphasized that since Egbetokun's appointment, there has been a troubling escalation in unlawful detentions and abuses against civilians, particularly targeting journalists and activists. "Under Egbetokun’s command, we are witnessing a systematic dismantling of human rights protections in Nigeria. His tenure is marked by egregious violations that threaten not only individual freedoms but also the very foundation of our democracy," Sowore stated.

The activist highlighted a recent incident involving the unlawful detention of journalist Daniel Ojukwu, who has been held without formal charges for exposing corruption within government ranks. "This is not an isolated case; it reflects a broader pattern of intimidation and suppression aimed at silencing dissent and accountability in governance," he added.

Sowore called on civil society organizations, international human rights groups, and concerned citizens to mobilize against these violations. "We must act decisively to challenge this tyranny before it becomes too late. The Nigerian Police must be held accountable for their actions, and we cannot allow the illegalities perpetrated by Egbetokun to go unchecked," he urged.
