The House of Representatives has initiated a formal investigation into the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) following serious allegations of complicity in smuggling activities at the nation's borders. This decision was made during a plenary session on December 11, 2024, led by Hon. Sesi Otuwaseun Whingan, representing Badagry Federal Constituency of Lagos State. The motion to probe the NCS was prompted by alarming reports detailing the involvement of Customs officers in facilitating smuggling operations.
Notably, investigative reports have highlighted incidents where over 2,000 vehicles laden with approximately six million kilograms of rice were smuggled through Badagry under the supervision of Customs personnel. These findings were corroborated by video evidence from renowned investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo, which has raised significant public concern regarding the integrity of the NCS.
In his address to fellow lawmakers, Whingan emphasized that these allegations not only breach the legal framework governing the NCS but also undermine public trust in a service mandated to prevent smuggling and protect national security. He cited an incident on December 1, 2024, where Customs officers, in collaboration with military personnel, allegedly assaulted two transporters suspected of documenting smuggling activities. This incident has further fueled calls for accountability within the service.
The House has directed its Committees on Defence and Customs to conduct a thorough investigation into these allegations and report back within six weeks.
Hon. Whingan stated, "The actions of some officers within the Nigeria Customs Service contravene its core mandate and pose significant risks to national security and economic stability." He further called for immediate measures to restore public confidence in the NCS and ensure accountability among its ranks.
