The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called for the collaboration of the Anambra State Monarchs, particularly His Royal Majesty, the Obi of Onitsha, to enhance road safety in the state. The Corps seeks to engage traditional leaders in sensitization efforts to reduce the growing number of road accidents and fatalities.
During a meeting in Awka, the State capital, the Corps’ Sector Commander for Anambra, Mrs. Ifeoma Ojukwu, emphasized the critical role that traditional institutions play in shaping public behavior and promoting safety within communities. She expressed the need for a unified approach to tackle road safety issues in the state, with the active involvement of local leaders.
“We believe that traditional leaders are key stakeholders in influencing positive behavior within their communities. With the monarch’s influence and respect, we can reach a broader audience and further spread the message of road safety,” Mrs. Ojukwu stated. “Our goal is to reduce road accidents, fatalities, and injuries by fostering a culture of responsible driving and pedestrian awareness.”
The FRSC also highlighted the increasing number of road accidents in Anambra, particularly during the festive period, which sees a surge in travel across the state. The Corps noted that many accidents are often linked to reckless driving, lack of safety precautions, and poor road conditions.
His Royal Majesty, the Obi of Onitsha, who was present at the meeting, welcomed the partnership and pledged to leverage his influence and the traditional institutions to support the FRSC’s efforts. He assured that he would mobilize other monarchs in the state to participate in the campaign to raise awareness and educate the public on the importance of road safety.
“I am committed to this cause and will rally the support of my fellow monarchs and the entire community to ensure that we all work together towards making Anambra’s roads safer for everyone,” the Obi of Onitsha remarked.
