The residents of a prominent Bayelsa community have expressed their strong disapproval over the recent award of a government contract to Henry Ofongo, a former lawmaker, citing his history of awarding contracts to himself and consistently abandoning projects in the past.

In a statement issued by the community leaders, they outlined a series of past instances where Mr. Ofongo, during his tenure as a lawmaker, secured multiple contracts for himself, only to leave them incomplete or entirely neglected. These failures have caused significant setbacks to the community’s development, leaving residents in a state of frustration and disillusionment.

The community leaders emphasized that awarding another contract to Ofongo sends the wrong message to the people, particularly in light of the numerous unfinished projects that continue to affect their daily lives. They expressed concerns that the lack of accountability in past projects could be repeated, ultimately hindering the progress and well-being of the community.

“We cannot afford to allow history to repeat itself,” said one community leader. “We have seen enough of Mr. Ofongo’s pattern of taking contracts, making promises, and then walking away from the projects, leaving our people with unfinished roads, schools, and other essential infrastructure. It is time for real change, and we need leaders who will prioritize the welfare of the community over personal gain.”

The community has called on the relevant authorities, including the state government and contractors, to reconsider the decision to award any future contracts to Henry Ofongo until he can demonstrate a clear commitment to transparency, accountability, and project completion. They are also urging the government to explore other qualified individuals or firms with a proven track record of successfully executing contracts that will benefit the people of Bayelsa.
