Political tensions in Rivers State escalated today as the camps of the state’s immediate past governor, Nyesom Wike, and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, engaged in a bitter clash over conflicting claims regarding a recent protest in Abuja. The dispute has further intensified political rivalries between the two factions, adding fuel to the already charged atmosphere ahead of the 2024 elections.

The controversy erupted when allegations surfaced that members of both Wike's and Fubara's camps had organized rival protests in the nation's capital in a bid to sway public opinion and assert political dominance. While the Fubara camp claims that the protest in Abuja was a peaceful demonstration organized to defend the current administration's policies, Wike’s supporters have dismissed these assertions, accusing Fubara's camp of misrepresenting the purpose and scale of the protest.

Speaking on the matter, a spokesperson for Wike’s camp described the protest as "a smokescreen" aimed at diverting attention from the mounting challenges facing the Fubara administration, particularly in the areas of governance and infrastructure. "This is nothing more than a desperate attempt to mislead the public. We have credible information that the protest was orchestrated to deflect from the mounting criticisms of the Fubara government,” the spokesperson stated.

In contrast, Fubara's camp defended the demonstration, calling it a legitimate expression of support for the governor's leadership. "The Abuja protest was a peaceful show of solidarity with Governor Fubara's vision for Rivers State. It was organized by well-meaning Rivers citizens who are committed to the progress and development of the state," a representative of the Fubara camp remarked.

As both camps continue to trade accusations, the political atmosphere in Rivers State remains increasingly polarized, with key political figures aligning themselves with either side. Wike, who has maintained a significant influence over state politics, is reportedly gearing up for a decisive role in the upcoming elections, with his camp positioning itself as the primary opposition force against the current administration.

The feud has not only captured the attention of local political observers but also sparked concerns among residents of Rivers State about the stability of governance as the state approaches critical political decisions. Analysts are warning that unless a resolution is reached, the ongoing rivalry could further deepen divisions within the state's political elite, impacting both governance and the public perception of leadership.
