The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has announced an increase in its tuition fees for new students starting from the 2024/2025 academic session. In a move that has sparked significant debate, the university revealed that newly admitted students will now be required to pay approximately N400,000 per session.
The fee hike, which affects both undergraduate and postgraduate students, represents a substantial increase compared to previous years. Prior to this adjustment, the tuition fees for new students were considerably lower, particularly for those in undergraduate programs.
In a statement released by the university administration, officials explained that the tuition hike was necessary to address the rising cost of university operations. The statement highlighted that inflationary pressures, coupled with increasing overheads for maintaining infrastructure, upgrading facilities, and enhancing the quality of education, have necessitated the revision of fees.
Dr. Abimbola Adebayo, the Vice Chancellor of LAUTECH, stated: “This adjustment is essential to ensure the sustainability of the university and to continue providing our students with world-class education and state-of-the-art facilities. The university’s commitment to academic excellence and the development of our students remains unwavering, and this fee increase will help us achieve those goals.”
The decision has generated mixed reactions among students, parents, and educational stakeholders. While some acknowledge the rising cost of higher education and the need for increased funding, others have expressed concerns about the affordability of tuition, particularly for students from low-income families. The hike may also place a strain on prospective students who had already made financial plans based on previous tuition rates.
University representatives have assured that support mechanisms, including scholarships and financial aid programs, will be available to help mitigate the impact on deserving students.
As LAUTECH moves forward with the new fee structure, the administration has reiterated its commitment to delivering high-quality education and fostering an environment conducive to academic growth. In addition to improved facilities, the university is also focused on expanding research opportunities and developing strategic partnerships to enhance the overall student experience.
