A wave of outrage has swept across social media platforms in Nigeria, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), following the public apology issued by Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya to House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh. The apology comes after a disturbing incident where Ikwechegh was captured on video slapping and verbally abusing Abuwatseya during a package delivery on October 28.

In a video statement released on November 7, Abuwatseya expressed regret for allegedly provoking Ikwechegh's violent outburst, stating, "I actually want to apologize to him for whatever I must have said or done to provoke him to that level of anger." He further called for national unity and forgiveness, urging Nigerians to "move beyond the incident" and "forgive and forget" as part of a collective healing process.

The backlash from Nigerian netizens has been swift and fierce. Many are questioning why the victim of an assault would feel compelled to apologize to his aggressor, highlighting a perceived culture of impunity among public officials. Critics argue that Abuwatseya's statement undermines the seriousness of the assault and sends a troubling message about accountability for those in positions of power.

The altercation began when Abuwatseya attempted to deliver a package to Ikwechegh's residence. Video footage shows Ikwechegh physically assaulting the driver and making threats, including a chilling remark about making him "disappear from Nigeria."

Following public outcry, Ikwechegh has been arraigned at a Magistrate Court in Kuje, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of assault. The legal proceedings are ongoing as the case continues to draw attention.

Social media users have expressed disbelief at Abuwatseya's apology, with many calling it a capitulation to power dynamics that favor the privileged. Comments on various platforms reflect a growing frustration with how public figures often evade consequences for their actions
