In a recent interview, Tonye Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the 2023 Rivers State gubernatorial election, expressed grave concerns over the escalating political violence in Rivers State, particularly following the recent local government elections. He emphasized that the people of Rivers are the "biggest losers" in a political landscape marred by conflict and discord.

Cole highlighted the urgent need for dialogue among key political figures in the state, including former governors Nyesom Wike, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Odili, alongside current Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He stated, “Until these leaders set aside their personal interests and come together for peace talks, Rivers State will continue to suffer from violence and instability.”

The political unrest, according to Cole, is rooted in longstanding rivalries and conflicts that have persisted through various administrations. He noted that the recent court ruling affirming the voiding of the 2024 budget has further complicated the situation, leaving Governor Fubara in a precarious position with multiple factions vying for power. “The governance of Rivers State is at a standstill,” Cole remarked. “The interests of the people are being overshadowed by political battles among a small group of leaders.”

Cole's comments come on the heels of increasing violence during local elections, where he criticized the culture that suggests one cannot win an election without resorting to violence. “This is not just about politics; it’s about the future of Rivers State,” he asserted. “We need to break this cycle of violence and create an environment where development can thrive.”

In a call to action, Cole urged President Bola Tinubu to facilitate a peace summit involving all major stakeholders in Rivers politics to address these issues head-on. He believes that without such intervention, the cycle of violence will only continue to escalate.
