The Nigerian Senate has initiated an investigation into the allegations made by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) regarding the recovery of illicit drugs from the residence of Senator Oyelola Ashiru, representing Kwara South. This move follows a contentious exchange between the senator and the NDLEA, raising concerns about the integrity of the agency and its operations.
The NDLEA has publicly accused Senator Ashiru’s residence of being a storage site for illegal drugs, asserting that some aides of the senator were arrested during a raid and are currently facing prosecution. In response, Senator Ashiru has vehemently denied these claims, labeling them as unfounded and politically motivated. He has challenged the NDLEA to provide evidence of any legal proceedings against those arrested in connection with his residence.
Senator Ashiru's spokesperson stated, "The NDLEA claims to have discovered drugs in Senator Ashiru’s Ilorin house, but there’s no information on which court of law the culprits were charged." This statement reflects the senator's ongoing criticism of the NDLEA, which he accuses of corruption and misconduct.
In a press briefing held at its national headquarters in Abuja, the NDLEA defended its actions and reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking in Nigeria. Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman/CEO of NDLEA, emphasized that the agency will not be deterred by political attacks and will continue to dismantle drug networks across the country, including those allegedly linked to Senator Ashiru.
"The remarks made by Senator Ashiru in the Senate are a gross misrepresentation of facts and an attempt to undermine our integrity," Marwa stated. "We believe that our stakeholders and partners can see through such calculated mendacity."
The Senate's investigation aims to clarify these serious allegations and ensure accountability within both the legislative and enforcement bodies involved. As this situation develops, it underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Nigeria in addressing drug-related issues while navigating political dynamics.
