The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a strong statement accusing the Nigerian government of systematic persecution against its leader, Nnamdi Kanu. This assertion comes in light of Kanu's continued detention and the government's alleged violations of court orders regarding his release.

In a recent press release, IPOB's Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, emphasized that Kanu's unwavering commitment to the quest for an independent Biafra is the primary reason behind his ongoing legal troubles. "Nnamdi Kanu is being persecuted, not prosecuted," Powerful stated. "His refusal to abandon the Biafran cause has made him a target for the Nigerian government, which seeks to silence any dissent against its authority."

Kanu, who was arrested in June 2021 and extradited to Nigeria, faces multiple charges including terrorism and treasonable felony. IPOB argues that these charges are politically motivated and designed to suppress the broader movement for Biafran independence. The group contends that Kanu's leadership has galvanized support for their cause, which the Nigerian government had hoped to extinguish.

IPOB further criticized the government for its heavy-handed tactics in dealing with pro-Biafran activists. The statement highlighted ongoing human rights abuses in southeastern Nigeria, including extrajudicial killings and arbitrary arrests aimed at stifling dissent. "The government's actions reflect a deep-seated fear of the Biafran movement," Powerful added.

In light of these developments, IPOB has called for international attention and intervention to ensure Kanu's immediate and unconditional release. The organization maintains that Kanu's detention is not just an affront to his rights but also a violation of the democratic principles that Nigeria purports to uphold.

IPOB urges all supporters and citizens concerned about human rights abuses to join in peaceful protests demanding justice for Nnamdi Kanu and the recognition of the Biafran people's right to self-determination.
