The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commenced the construction of a multi-purpose dam upstream of the River Dura in Benue State. This significant initiative aims to mitigate the recurring flooding that has severely impacted communities along the river and surrounding areas.
The decision to construct the dam comes in response to persistent flooding exacerbated by the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, which has caused widespread devastation across several states in Nigeria, including Benue. Recent reports indicate that last year’s floods resulted in damages estimated between $3.79 billion and $9.12 billion, displacing thousands and destroying vital agricultural lands.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, emphasized the importance of this project during a press briefing. “This dam is not just a structure; it represents our commitment to safeguarding lives and livelihoods in Benue and neighboring states. We are taking proactive steps to ensure that our communities are better protected against future flooding events,” he stated.
The new dam is designed to serve multiple purposes, including flood control, irrigation support for local agriculture, and providing clean water for domestic use. The construction is part of a broader strategy by the Federal Government to enhance water management systems across the country and address the challenges posed by climate change.
In addition to the dam's construction, the government is also implementing short-term measures such as early warning systems and emergency relief efforts for those affected by recent floods. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been mobilized to provide immediate assistance to communities facing imminent threats from rising water levels.
Umar Muhammed, Director-General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), noted that this dam is a crucial step toward long-term flood management solutions. “We are also looking at expanding tributaries and desilting existing dams to improve water flow management,” he added.
As construction progresses, the Federal Government urges residents living in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines provided by local authorities.
The government remains committed to ensuring that all necessary resources are allocated for the successful completion of this project, with an eye toward enhancing resilience against future flooding disasters.
