The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the commencement of the inspection of election materials related to the Edo State governorship election, following a request from the All Progressives Congress (APC). The inspection is set to take place on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the INEC Headquarters in Edo State.
This decision comes after a series of public protests and legal efforts by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, who is contesting the results of the September 21 governorship election. The PDP alleged that there were significant irregularities in the electoral process that necessitated a thorough examination of the election materials, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices.
Dr. Anugbom Onuoha, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, emphasized that the inspection is a fundamental right for all parties involved in election petitions. He stated, “INEC remains committed to transparency and integrity in the electoral process,” and assured that all necessary measures would be taken to facilitate a smooth inspection process.
The initial attempt to inspect the materials was marred by a clash between legal teams representing both the PDP and APC, which led to delays. However, following discussions and an acknowledgment of the need for compliance with court orders, INEC has rescheduled the inspection to ensure all parties can participate effectively.
Dr. Anthony Aziegbemin, Chairman of the PDP in Edo State, hailed this development as a “win for democracy and the rule of law.” He expressed gratitude to supporters who rallied for transparency in the electoral process and reiterated confidence in the judiciary to uphold democratic principles.
The inspection is critical as it will provide both parties with access to evidence that could significantly impact ongoing legal proceedings regarding the election results. With only hours left before filing deadlines for electoral petitions, this opportunity could prove essential for Dr. Ighodalo’s legal team.
As stakeholders prepare for this pivotal moment in Edo’s electoral landscape, all eyes will be on INEC to ensure that the inspection process is conducted fairly and transparently.
